There is no shortage of wood in the Bregenzerwald area. In this isolated region woodcraft has been perfected and developed over the centuries and the area today is renowned for its excellent craftsmanship. For hundreds of years our carpenter’s travelled through Europe proving their skills. On their journeys they collected ideas and inspiration which were then put into practice at home.
So it’s no surprise that a great many famous architects come from or lived in Bregenzerwald. Driving through the villages of the region is almost like visiting an exhibition on wooden architecture. The old is restored and the new created using traditional techniques for modern designs which are in some cases radical and extremely innovative. Things have always been, and still are, built to last here. The wooden architecture of the region stands for quality so many different ways.
The Hotel Post is itself an example of this. For architecture enthusiasts the hotel, with its many extensions and renovations, designed by the architects Leopold Kaufmann and Oskar Leo Kaufmann, is indeed worth a visit in its own right.
The majority of the fittings and furnishings were also designed by Oskar Leo Kaufmann especially for the hotel and were built by local craftsmen. Whether it be the hand woven linen curtains, wooden tables and beds or leather sofas, modern styling combined with traditional workmanship can be found throughout the hotel.
