If you are looking for a good excuse to visit the Bregenzerwald, there are two top-class cultural events every year to choose from.
A festival for Franz Schubert which would accord him his due place alongside Mozart and Beethoven – this was the idea behind the Schubertiade founded in 1976. Today it is considered one of the most important festivals in Austria and attracts international visitors. From June 14th – 24th and from August 24th to September 9th 2008 the festival will host approx. 70 concerts including chorus evenings with outstanding artists, chamber concerts and piano recitals, orchestra concerts, readings and master classes.
Today most of the concerts are held in the Angelika Kaufmann Hall in Schwarzenberg which, along side the Mozart Hall in Vienna and Salzburg’s Mozarteum, is considered one of the best chamber music halls in Austria. Concert visitors are surrounded by fantastic views of meadows, forests and mountains. Before the concert and during the pause guests meet on the forecourt or on the panorama terrace and instead of a bell to signal the start of the concert, two hornists play a piece from Franz Schubert. Additional concerts are held in the town of Hohenems and in other selected locations. You will find the full Schubertiade programme here: www.schubertiade.at.
The Bregenz Festival takes place in July and August every year. The heart of the festival is the opera stage which floats on the waters of the Bodensee lake. The lake provides a magnificent backdrop for the spectacular productions that are staged as part of the festival each year. The impressive stage design, technical wizardry and the unique “Bregenzer Richtungshören” amplification for excellent acoustics make this an unforgettable opera experience. The festival was launched in 1946, since then the orchestral music has been played by members of the “Wiener Symphony Orchestra”.
Top-class theatre performances and concerts as well as exhibitions and numerous special events make the Bregenz Festival one of the most important cultural summer events in Europe.
