Building with wood
Bregenzerwald architecture is characterised by building with natural materials from the region. Even today, traditional timber construction techniques provide ideas and inspiration for modern buildings and objects. The Kaufmann family of architects also has its roots in the carpentry trade.
Family affair
With a mixture of newly built and what was already good in the past, the Kaufmann family has created a hotel that can undoubtedly be described as a prime example of Bregenzerwald architecture and craftsmanship in the region. Oskar Leo Kaufmann designed most of the furnishings especially for the hotel and they were realised by regional craftsmen.
Stage for craftsmanship
The combination of tradition and innovation through the interplay of craftsmanship and design has led to a unique approach to design in the Bregenzerwald. The Werkraumhaus in Andelsbuch, designed by architect Peter Zumthor, is an exhibition space and archive of the skills of Bregenzerwald craftsmen. Andelsbuch is only about 20 minutes away from Bezau – and is definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in architecture.
