The Bregenzerwald is an area of gentle hills, broad plains, romantic river valleys and imposing peaks. The locals - known as “Wälder” - are considered to be mindful people, who are proud of their roots yet open to new ideas.
In the middle of the Bregenzerwald
Bezau lies on a broad valley floor at an elevation of 650 metres and has about 2,000 residents. In early times, Bezau was the terminus of the Bregenzerwald railway, which connected Bregenz to the Bregenzerwald. Today, many beautiful destinations and summits can be reached from Bezau. Bezau is also part of a unique gourmet experience, the Bregenzerwald Cheese Route.
A 3-step agricultural use of the pastures has been practised in the Bregenzerwald for centuries. This type of agriculture has been on the list of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage since 2011.
